TOP 5 CANADIAN SHORTS THAT KILLED IT AT TORONTO AFTER DARK PT.II

We hope you enjoyed our previous list of what we thought were some of the best Canadian shorts that screened before the feature film at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival.  In this list, we are going to list our top 5 Canadian Shorts that screened during Canadian Shorts After Dark.   We want to start with the film Plainsong (Mélopé) directed by Alexis Fortier Gauthier which reminded us of that slow-burner mood that Robert Eggers put us in The Witch.  Three young adults go vacationing out to the countryside where tensions start to grow amongst them.   Subsequently, some kind of haunting presence in the ocean has captivated one of them as it mimics the music that he plays.  Plainsong is a beautiful film and it is well crafted and reminds of the many terrifying challenges we have to go through and tough decisions we have to make when we are growing up in adolescence.

Director Frédéric Chalté directs this fun short film No One Will Ever Believe You which is about about a little child Lucy, played by Mandy St. Jacques Turpin, who wants to scare the wits out of her sister Maggie, played by Émilie Lovitt, on Halloween night.  So she covers herself in a ghoulish blanket and hides in the closet until her sister comes home and walks into her bedroom.  Little did they both know that there is something creepy lurking under the bed that will turn their Halloween night into something that they did not see coming.  Another film that reminds us of childhood when we wouldn’t look at what is under the bed.  We guess this short film is what would exactly happen if there was some sort of disturbance under there.

Directors Emily Gagne and Joshua Korngut direct this fun-filled horror film called Best Friends Forever which is about a group of teenage girls who are having a get-together and one of them decides to start sharing a spooky story about an outcast named Nancy.  Everyone starts to get spooked out especially when they think that she has rung the doorbell and ready to walk into the house to freak everyone out.  Unfortunately, this haunted presence has taken things to the next level as she has been summoned to be already in the house.  This just goes to show that some stories are not meant to be shared.  At all.

Have you been put to the test by people who have been on edge lately and saying shit to you that gives you anxiety?  Well look no further and be sure to watch this film about social anxiety called Alaska by Gwynne Phillips and Brianna Templeton of the award-winning duo Templeton Philharmonic as well as Chris Wilson who bring this horror-comedy.   The film takes place in Alaska where everyone freezes to death where a gathering is hosted by Brad, played by Paul Beer, and his wife Claire, played by Brianna Templeton.  Tom, played by Chris Wilson, and his wife Paige, played by Gwynne Phillips, are invited over and the anxiety starts to set in for Tom as he starts to believe that Brad does not like him.  Things start to head down south quickly at this gathering once the drinks start flowing and the cheers are for the worst things in mind.  A chilling short comedy film with a cast with lots of experience and witty dialogue.

You got to chalk another one up for the country of Quebec as well as Travelling Distribution as director Geoffrey Uloth brings a kick-ass short film called Moment.  Charli, played by Emilia Hellman, is a homeless young adult who is attacked by three masked men on Halloween men.  Time stops when things are about to get worse for Charli and two superheroes show up to not save her put to advise her what to do in the next immediate and pivotal seconds of her life.  Moment is well filmed and does not come off as being cheesy and corny.  It’s all about the next move that we have to make and consider in those moments in time.  Big applause has to go to Travelling Distribution for putting great films from this part of our country.
