FERNTV’s predictions for Golden Globes 2024

The Global Globes proves that there are no sure shots this year.

Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan in Maestro

The Golden Globes will be airing on the night of January 7th, 2024. The event is deemed to have swayed much interest from not only the industry but also the ones who have supported it throughout. The fans, the audience, and the cinephiles have stuck behind film ever since the writer’s strike, followed by the SAG strike. Many stars could not support their films on the red carpet at the film festivals during the awards season. Nonetheless, fans still streamed award-nominated films and went to see award-nominated films. The Barbenheimer weekend was a great reminder that fans are still flocking to the theatres to watch films.

No Sure Shots

This year’s Golden Globes Awards proves to be different because anyone in each category can take the award home. There’s not much parity when it comes to this year’s awards. It seems that this will go down to the wire. Even though it is based on the opinions of 300 or more journalists, it seems that they have their work cut out for themselves. In every category, there is more than one dark horse who can run with the award and that says a lot. But this year’s Golden Globes is quite compelling even though it is not a concrete foreshadowing of who is to bring home the gold at the Oscars. By the way, we are looking forward to Jo-Koy’s hosting capabilities. Bravo to him for being the first Filipino-American to host the Golden Globes

Predictions

Here are FERNTV‘s predictions for this year’s Golden Globes

Best Motion Picture Drama

Winner: Anatomy of a Fall (Neon Pictures)-Director Justin Triet is going to shock Hollywood this year for directing this masterpiece that won at Cannes. She is going to show the world that you do not need big-name actors/actresses to tell a story to the audience. Or win over critics for that matter.

Other Nominees: “Oppenheimer” (Universal Pictures)
“Killers of the Flower Moon” (Apple Original Films/Paramount Pictures)
“Maestro” (Netflix)
“Past Lives” (A24)
“The Zone of Interest” (A24)

Best Picture Musical or Comedy

Winner: The Holdovers (Focus Features)-It always seems that when Paul Giamatti is in a film and turns quickly into gold. The man doesn’t do a whole bunch of them throughout a year but when he shows up…Paul Giamatti shows up. I think it is about time to honour the man with an award.

Other Nominees: “Barbie” (Warner Bros.)
“Poor Things” (Searchlight Pictures)
“American Fiction” (MGM)
“May December” (Netflix)
“Air” (Amazon MGM Studios)

Best Director, Motion Picture

Winner: Bradley Cooper (Maestro)-This guy has done it all right? From The Hangover to now, Bradley Cooper’s as a do-it-all star in Hollywood has been amazing. According to Michael Fassbender, Bradley Cooper was just out of his mind when coming to directing and acting in this film. That says a lot.

Other Nominees: Greta Gerwig — “Barbie”
Yorgos Lanthimos — “Poor Things”
Christopher Nolan — “Oppenheimer”
Martin Scorsese — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Celine Song — “Past Lives”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama

Winner: Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) The young actor from Ireland has come a long way since The Killing of a Sacred Deer. FERNTV loves the fact that his minuscule role as The Joker in The Batman was not what made this actor who is he today. The man is a monster in a tuxedo suit with long sleeves that need to be cut at the moment. Or he’s just going to grow out of it. Besides they can’t give it all to Bradley Cooper right?

Other Nominees: Bradley Cooper — “Maestro”
Cillian Murphy — “Oppenheimer”
Leonardo DiCaprio — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Colman Domingo — “Rustin”
Andrew Scott — “All of Us Strangers”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama

Winner: Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) If it wasn’t for director Justin Triet or Jonathan Glazer, nobody would know how much of a beast this actress is. 2023 was her year and she happened to just sneak up on everyone’s radar and she is blowing its channels.

Other Nominees: Lily Gladstone — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Carey Mulligan – “Maestro”
Annette Bening — “Nyad”
Greta Lee — “Past Lives”
Cailee Spaeny — “Priscilla”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Winner: Emma Stone (Poor Things). FERNTV just loves the way Yorgos Lanthimos reframes Emma Stone in this picture along with Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo. We always see Emma Stone in the same kind of light but this one is rather darker and better which shows her versatility.

Fantasia Barrino – “The Color Purple”
Jennifer Lawrence – “No Hard Feelings”
Natalie Portman – “May December”
Alma Pöysti – “Fallen Leaves”
Margot Robbie – “Barbie”
Emma Stone – “Poor Things”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Winner: Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario)-The man has practically been everywhere the past several years but this role has to be one of the best. Perhaps it is time for the journalists to award this Nicolas Cage renaissance that we have experienced and hand this award outright for this role in Dream Scenario because it is just that good.

Timothée Chalamet — “Wonka”
Matt Damon — “Air”
Paul Giamatti — “The Holdovers”
Joaquin Phoenix — “Beau Is Afraid”
Jeffrey Wright — “American Fiction”

Like last year, the show will air on Rogers’ Citytv network in Canada. This means that those interested in tuning in will need to do so on the Citytv cable channel, citytv.com or the $4.99 Citytv+ channel on Prime Video
