No matter where you go, wrestling will always be a global phenomenon. Each wrestler that has ever come inside the squared circle has their own personality that they express. They all get the chance to fight against those who oppose them. At the same time, they show their courage and powers to their beloved fans. But once the lights go down and the show is over, each wrestler has another life they lead.

The film Luchadoras will premiere at SXSW online film festival. The documentary focuses on the lives of female fighters in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. A place known for femicide and mistreatment of women from drug cartels. The direction of Paola Calvo and Patrick Jasmin allows an up-close and personal of the lives of three female fighters. Each telling their victories and struggles in and out of the ring.

The Female Fighters

Lady Candy is the ultimate female fighter when she gets into the ring. It is a place where she vents her frustrations from her daily life. She is unable to see her children in El Paso, Texas because of visa issues. In addition, her husband violent abused causing them to part ways with him and her children. She continues to struggle to try to cross the border to see and communicate with her babies.

Baby Star is the masked female fighter who continues to wear her mask outside of the ring. Her daughter is the focus of her life and allows her to watch her matches in the small arenas. She is another Luchadoras who has left her husband. She tries to ride that slippery slope of being a female fighter and a single mother at the same time.

The smallest of the three but has the most heart. Mini Sernita puts herself on the line every time she gets in the ring at 40 years old. It’s not enough to pay for her medication for her ill mother. Furthermore, the female workers who commute to this dead-end factory are abused, raped and even killed. Nevertheless, Mini being a Luchadoras is her path to glory while putting everything on the line.
