FANTASIA 2018: THE RANGER

There was a surplus of fun movies that were screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal and one of those films that happened to land at that cream of the crop was The Ranger.  Director Jenn Wexler‘s horror film about a crew of teenage punks on the run is a fast moving watch from start to finish.  The film which was selected back in 2016 Frontières Co-Production made its presence known during this prestigious festival that celebrates genre films.  The film is lead by up and coming actress Chloe Levine who plays Chelsea.  She gets involved with her friends in brutal night of alcohol and drugs and a run in with the law at punk club.  She then leads her punk friends into a cabin in the woods that belongs to her family to hide away from the cops.

We have been taught throughout time through traditional cinema that when a bunch of teens go into the woods for whatever reason that things go south just like in Friday the 13th and Cabin Fever.  This film does not steer in the other direction but this time a psychotic ranger played by Jeremy Holm ends up having problems with these fearless teens.  Jeremy Holm reminds you of Kane from the World Wrestling Federation minus all the red leather and long greasy hair and adding a park ranger outfit.  He is that type of scary and how fitting that would be to a punk horror film like this.   As we used to laugh and make jokes about the park ranger Steve in Married With Children, let’s just say that this film makes you not look at rangers the same way again.   FERNTV spoke to the crew from The Ranger who discussed this film in more detail in the video above.
