Amy Wang in Slanted

Slanted, the upcoming satirical drama directed by Amy Wang, is set to premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 8, 2025. The film stars Shirley Chen as Joan Huang, an insecure Chinese-American high school senior who, in her quest to be crowned Prom Queen and gain peer acceptance, undergoes an experimental racial transformation to appear white. The narrative delves into the unforeseen emotional and physical turmoil that ensues, offering a sharp critique on race and the complexities of self-acceptance.

Joining Chen in the cast are McKenna Grace, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Amelie Zilber, Vivian Wu, and Fang Du. Production commenced in Atlanta in June 2024, with Tideline Entertainment and Mountain Top Pictures overseeing the project. Director Amy Wang, known for her work on “Crazy Rich Asians 2,” describes “Slanted” as a deeply personal film that explores the insecurities and fractured identity experienced by many. The film aims to resonate with audiences by addressing provocative issues faced by today’s youth in a sardonic yet meaningful manner.  FERNTV says that this is a film that many have been waiting for.
