Alicia Silverstone in Perpetrator @Tribeca 2023

It was quite the celebration for the feminist horror flick Perpetrator by director Jennifer Reeder at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film Shudder picked up a few months ago and premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival earlier this year made quite the homecoming. It was quite the homecoming for actor Christopher Lowell and lead actress Kiah McKirnan who are New York residents. But the biggest buzz for this red carpet event was the arrival of the Clueless star Alicia Silverstone. She came in fine form just minutes before the film was beginning.

A New Age of Horror

Perpetrator sets the tone for a new age of horror for this decade. Reckless teen Jonny Baptiste is sent to live with her Aunt Hildie played by Alicia Silverstone. Jonny’s father seems to experiencing severe headaches where his face starts to transform. So sending her to her aunt was deemed to be a great idea. Although, there is something strange about Aunt Hildie as she riding the slope of practical magic.

On her eighteeth birthday, Jonny experiences a radical metamorphisis were a family spell is casted on her called the Forevering. Things start to get a little zany and gnarly from this end where girls from Jonny’s school start to go missing. The audience begins to try to figure who the “Perpetrator” is and there are many suspects that easily pop up. Actor Christopher Lowell plays Principal Burke who comes off a little creepy and then there is actor Sasha Knusnetsoz who is just next level sinister. So it does have a little Clue and Knives Out mystique to the film.

But Jennifer Reeder puts her two cents in the film as it has much gore combining all these elements from great Hollywood films of the past. Perpetrator is a portrait of her vision for today’s horror from a feminist perspective. As her cast would say though that their was a real physical aspect to their role. Which makes any type of horror that much better.
