ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE BRINGS CHRISTMAS CHEER
We live in a world where we think Die Hard is a legitimate Christmas film even though Bruce Willis himself doesn’t think so. What if you threw in a film that was a musical with zombies during Christmas? You would get the genre-bending film Anna and the Apocalypse which recently screened at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. Director John McPhail combines all these elements and pulls it off in a mighty way where the audience may have been skeptical at first. The film is carried by a great cast which includes Ella Hunt who plays Anna and her best friend John who is played by Malcolm Cumming who face a zombie apocalypse in the town of Little Haven. After contemplating trying to get out of their town and perhaps greener pastures, Anna and John and many of their high school friends which includes Steph, who is played by Toronto’s own Sarah Swire, who all have to sing, dance and kill their way to survive the zombies in their town during the night before Christmas.
You might be singing, “Tell Me More, Tell Me More” but we don’t want to spoil all the fun in this review. Anna and the Apocalypse has all the elements of being a fantastic film which includes great acting, wonderful singing, fantastic make-up, top-notch action, clever humour, and that joyous Christmas cheer. Not to mention the blood, gore and violence that all of us want in a zombie movie are just as good if not better than the Walking Dead. If you have no knowledge of what Anna and the Apocalypse is about then it is best because this film executes its goods in a finesse manner. If all you know that Anna and the Apocalypse is a zombie musical then take it and go watch the film in a theatre because it is one hell of an experience. And by the way, this is a Christmas film that leaves you warm and maybe bloody outside.
