The enthusiastic applause at Cannes is a testament to Lanthimos’s ability to captivate and challenge viewers with his unique storytelling and bold thematic choices. The film’s intricate portrayal of taboo subjects and complex, intertwining narratives demonstrate Lanthimos’s skill in blending dark, provocative content with compelling character studies. The powerful performances by Plemons, Dafoe, and Stone further enhanced the film’s impact, contributing to the intense atmosphere that left the audience in awe.

The 2-hour, 44-minute film tells three interconnecting stories. One centers on a man (Plemons) whose wealthy boss (Dafoe) outlines every facet of his life, from what he eats and drinks to what he wears. Another centers on a policeman (Plemons), whose marine biologist wife (Stone) goes missing, but when she is rescued and returned home, he becomes convinced the woman who came back is not his wife. The third story centers on a woman (Stone) who has abandoned her husband (Alwyn) to join a sex cult, run by characters played by Dafoe and Chau.

At the Cannes Film Festival, director Yorgos Lanthimos received a prolonged 4.5-minute standing ovation for his provocative film, Kinds of Kindness. This film, starring notable actors Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Emma Stone, is a daring exploration divided into a trilogy of interconnected stories. The narrative delves into deeply unsettling themes such as sex cults and cannibalism, pushing the boundaries of conventional cinema and eliciting strong reactions from the audience.
