5 FILMS THAT WILL BREAK GROUND @TIFF 2021
Five films @TIFF 2021 that prove that we truly live in a different world during COVID-19
It’s that time of the year where FERNTV suggests what you should watch during TIFF. This year’s event will prioritize your health and safety allowing you to navigate the festival. There are approximately 150 films on this year’s slate. To make things easier, TIFF will allow the audience the option to watch at home or selected theatres and drive-ins. Our picks this year reflect of the different world we live in especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dune
Without further ado, we suggest director’s Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune which has the whole industry buzzing. The film will make its premiere at the Ontario Cinesphere giving you the IMAX experience that it truly deserves. Led by actor Timothée Chalamet, this ensemble of Zendaya, Javier Bardem and Jason Momoa will take this rendition to the next level. Frank Hebert‘s epic story will finally get the cinematic appeal that it truly deserves.
Titane
Fresh from her win of the Palmes D’Or at Cannes Film Festival this year, director Julia Ducournau‘s Titane is the buzz. After premiering the unforgettable Raw at Midnight Madness a few years ago, the avant-garde director has put her stamp on the industry. Titane focuses on human extremity after an automobile accident that leaves disturbing consequences for many. The audience will never be the same after watching this film. So put your seat belts on and enjoy the ride.
Jagged
Jagged is a documentary that focuses on Canadian icon Alanis Morrissette. The singer reflects on the record selling album Jagged Little Pill in 1995. She also speaks of her rise to stardom at the tender age of 21. Director Alison Klayman who is no stranger to this type of work after doing Ai WeiWie: Never Sorry. She delves deep with Alanis Morrissette also reflecting being a woman and reaching those heights in the music industry.
Last Night in Soho
The director of Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver brings a new type of flavour to his fans. Edgar Wright directs this anticipated feature Last Night in Soho to TIFF. The film focuses on Eloise played by Thomasin McKenzie, who is obsessed with 1960s culture. Her life gets intertwined with a Sandy played by Anya Taylor Joy, who is living in 1966. As both start to venture to the dark side, things rather start to get that much more interesting in Soho. Especially with Edgar Wright’s vision.
The Guilty
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal manages always to squeeze himself into TIFF all the time. The Guilty is directed by Antoine Fuqua, Gyllenhaal plays a police officer Joe Bayler. After one of his shifts, his duty is to receive emergency calls at Los Angeles 911 dispatch centre. A wildfire is raging towards the city of Angels. Joe receives a call from a woman in distress, played by Riley Keough. Joe must figure out what exactly is going on with her and by all means necessary to keep her alive. The Guilty is a film that reflects how crazy our world is and can get. Gyllenhaal is already getting a buzz for his performance being Oscar worthy.
