SXSW 2023
299 Queen Street West screening @SXSW
A nostalgic documentary on the success of MuchMusic in Toronto
SXSW announced their second slate of films for their upcoming film festival in Austin, Texas. The SXSW Film Festival will be premiering 299 Queen Street West by director Sean Benard who directed The Carter Effect in 2017.
The documentary tells the story of a scrappy Canadian television upstart from the perspective of the VJ’s who at the time had no prior TV hosting experience, received no direction, no scripts and broadcasted live across the country. Otherwise known as MuchMusic
The channel’s rise in popularity intersected with rap music entering the mainstream, and the birth of grunge and alternative rock and pop stars caused teenage hysteria at the iconic street-level studio.
Former VJs Steve Anthony, Rick Campanelli, Monika Deol, Denise Donlon, Erica Ehm, Namugenyi Kiwanuka, Sook-Yin Lee, George Stroumboulopoulos, Bill Welychka and Michael Williams all appear in the film.
299 Queen Street West will screen under the 24 beats per second section at SXSW.
SXSW Film Festival will run from March 10th-March 19th 2023
FERNTV highly recommends this one. Stay tuned for screening dates at SXSW.
