TIFF 2022
10 FILMS TO SEE @ TIFF2022
Finally in 2022, a full fledge TIFF with our TOP 10 list.
TIFF 2022 is going to be special. It’s been quite a long time since each and every one of us could enjoy the benefits of TIFF. A digital edition of TIFF took place in 2020 where there were no theatres and COVID-19 rates were still high. A hybrid version took place in 2021 where audiences were allowed into theatres but had to be socially distanced from others. An exciting edition of the festival where not many celebs took planes over to Toronto to promote the film.
Now it’s 2022 and everything seems back to normal. Audiences are allowed back and parties will be taking place. King St. will be shut down and celebs will return to the red carpet this year. Last but not least, FERNTV‘s rundown of the top 10 films you should watch at the TIFF 2022 is on once again.
The Banshees of Inisherin
We start our list with The Banshees Of Inisherin directed by Martin McDonagh. The director of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in a tale of friendship. It suddenly stops when one of them decides that the company is over. Set in the 1920s on the Irish island of Inisherin, the feud between the two takes over the whole town. Director Martin McDonagh is brilliant at making his audiences laugh in theatres. This you can experience again at TIFF 2022.
Pearl
If you managed to miss director Ti West‘s slasher horror flick X, now is the time to give it a go. The prequel to the film, Pearl has landed a spot on the Midnight Madness roster and where Mia Goth returns. This time it’s set in 1918. When there was a war in Europe and a pandemic causing division and paranoia in the United States. Doesn’t that sound familiar? It is back to the Texas ranch where more of Mia Goth’s murderess is revealed.
Causeway
After Mother! divided the industry after premiering at TIFF in 2017, many were giving up on Jennifer Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky. Ironically, both are returning to the festival this year with installments that may make you forget about Mother! Causeway is Lila Neugebauer‘s directorial debut which focuses on Lawrence’s character Lynsey. She is a soldier that returns home from Afghanistan after a terrible accident to her home in New Orleans to her neglectful mother.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Director Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out did so well at the box office that he along with Daniel Craig did not waste time making a sequel. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has Daniel Craig returning as Detective Benoit Blanc who goes to the exotic country of Greece to figure out another murder mystery. He is again surrounded by a great ensemble cast. This includes Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe and Edward Norton who make everything more interesting.
Prisoner’s Daughter
It shouldn’t be too difficult to put a tearjerker of a film together especially when you have the right performers involved. The story is pretty simple with Brian Cox being an ex-boxer who just got out of jail and has pancreatic cancer. He wants to reconnect with his daughter played by Kate Beckinsale and the grandson he never ended up getting to know. Things start to go south by his violent past when he starts to make amends. Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke gets behind Prisoner’s Daughter and it’s already causing a buzz in the industry.
The End of Sex
Director Sean Garrity and actor/writer Jonas Chernick team up once again a decade later to bring you another Canadian sexual installment to TIFF. My Awkward Sexual Adventure was quite the classic but this time around Chernick teams up again with Schitt’s Creek Emily Hampshire who plays a married couple trying to find that magic once again in The End of Sex. This is another chance for Canadian audiences to get a good look at how talented Jonas Chernick is in front and behind the camera with his screenplays. One of the most underrated Canadian actors as we speak.
Victim
TIFF always seems to surprise us every year with some diamonds in the rough. Victim directed by Michal Blasko is certainly one of those films that will shine this year with his dramatic feature. Vita Smachelyuk plays Irinia who is a Ukrainian mother and immigrant to the Czech Republic. Her son is in the hospital with major injuries and once he does come to, he claims that he was beaten up by local Roma boys. There are holes in his story but once those are dug up, director Blasko gives us one hell of a ride.
The Good Nurse
It doesn’t seem like recent Oscar winner Jessica Chastain has a stop button. She is still in full gear with The Good Nurse which is a true crime thriller by director Tobias Lindholm. Chastain plays a single mother Amy who strikes up a good friendship with a new nurse member Cullen played by Eddie Redmayne. Little does she know that he has somewhat of a mysterious past. Furthermore, many of her recovering patients in the New Jersey hospital that she works in are dying all of sudden. The Good Nurse will prove to be a strong thriller in 2022.
The Colour of Ink
Director Brian D. Johnson will sure get quite the homecoming welcome as his film The Colour of Ink will be presented at TIFF. The documentary focuses on Toronto-based artist Jason Logan who is an artist and an ink maker. With the help of cinematographer Nicholas de Pencier, this film looks at the history of ink and its impact. Jason Logan even scouts locations in Toronto that you would not think of to look for ink.
Triangle of Sadness
This year’s Palme d’Or is due up for some Oscar consideration. Director Ruben Östlund is going through quite the whirlwind of a time after the unexpected death of Charlbi Dean. Perhaps that will pull this ensemble cast together to make a run for Best Picture. Nevertheless, the shots at the ultra-rich are definitely made in this film which seems to be a little trend. TIFF 2022 will not disappoint with this feature.
